Animal Control officers enforce County regulations fowl, poultry, livestock, and dangerous animals; check for animal licenses and dog tags; and control stray animals. They administer the animal shelter ( open Mon.-Fri., noon to 1 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m.; Sat. noon to 4 p.m.) and investigate animal cruelty and abuse cases and bite/rabies cases.
Animal Control does not handle non-domesticated animals such as deer, raccoons, skunks or any rodents or reptiles. A qualified pest control business or in cases of big game animals, a Virginia State Game Warden should be contacted.
Rabies vaccinations and tags are required for dogs. Dog tags/licenses are available at the Treasurer's Office, 755 Roanoke St., Christiansburg.
Animal Control Officers are on duty or on call at all times. A message may be left during closed hours at 382-5795. For emergencies, contact the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office at 382-2951.
The Animal Shelter, 434 Cinnabar Road, is open limited hours for retrieval of lost dogs and adoptions.
